More than most people, Tikki Brown, Minnesota Department of Human Services assistant commissioner for children and family services, understands the importance of expanding food aid to the state’s youngest residents.

Baby and mother win right to access Healthy Start food scheme | Benefits

A one-year-old baby and her mother have won a high court challenge granting her the right to access a healthy food and vitamins scheme from which she was previously barred. Thousands of babies and toddlers similarly denied access to the scheme will now be able to benefit from it.

Healthy Start aims to reduce child poverty and health inequalities by providing free vitamins, dietary advice and weekly vouchers to buy nutritious food or infant formula to low-income families with pregnant women and children up to the age of four. It is intended to benefit those in the “greatest need”.

The USDA’s Summer Food Services Program is helping to fun the new Kaukau 4 Keiki partnership to provide children living in Hawai’i’s rural areas with healthy food.

The new partnerhship Kaukau 4 Keiki will provide healthy food during the summer for children living in rural areas of Hawaiʻi.

Weekly breakfast and lunch meal kits will be provided for children 18-and-under in rural communities with zip codes starting with “967″.  The weekly meal kits will be available from June 7 for Oʻahu and June 14 for neighbor islands. The program runs through July 31.

Utopian grocery store giving people access to healthy food on the southeast side

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) – Utopian Community Grocery store is opening this month and supporters say it’s aimed at ending the food desert on the southeast side of Fort Wayne. 

Utopian Community Grocery is set to open May 15th at 7a.m. according to a Facebook post. The store will have fresh produce from local farmers or community gardens.  

The USDA reported in 2017 that 10 percent of people in Allen County are living in a food desert.  

That means those people have low access to a grocery store with healthy and affordable options close to their home
