Drinking coffee and tea could lower your risk of dementia and stroke

Your morning cup(s) of joe or tea could be reducing you risk of dementia and stroke, according to a new study. 

Over 10 to 14 years, the peer-reviewed study published in PLOS Medicine followed more than 360,000  participants to estimate the associations between coffee and tea consumption and incident stroke and dementia. 

Researchers found those who drank two to three cups of coffee or three to five cups of tea or a combination of both for four to six cups a day had the lowest risk of dementia or stroke.

This is denser than regular coffee cake, as it’s made by the melt-and-mix method. I use a coffee extract for it, made by Nielsen-Massey. If you can’t find it, use Camp Coffee, available in most supermarkets.

Serves 10
For the cake
unsalted butter 225g, plus more for the tin
strong coffee 200ml, preferably espresso
soft light brown sugar 150g
golden syrup 225g
coffee extract 2 tsp
eggs 2 large, lightly beaten
plain flour 240g
malted brown or wholemeal flour 100g

bicarbonate of soda 1 tsp
walnuts 75g, roughly chopped
