Social media posts by celebrities often promote junk food

Almost 90% of celebrity food and drink social media posts in a recent study were unhealthy enough to be essentially illegal under current British youth-related advertising regulations, the researchers pointed out. Photo by rawpixel/Pixabay

Images of people eating and drinking are a staple of social media, but new research finds such posts from celebrities often puts the spotlight squarely on junk food.

Celebrities’ Social Media Promotes Junk Food, Often for Free | Health

THURSDAY, Jan. 13, 2022 (HealthDay News) — Images of people eating and drinking are a staple of social media, but new research finds such posts from celebrities often puts the spotlight squarely on junk food.

Profit isn’t always the reason why, investigators found: Celebrities often highlight unhealthy food favorites without getting paid for it.

“Ninety-five percent of photos that contain foods and beverages on celebrities’ Instagram profiles were actually not sponsored by food or beverage companies,” noted study lead author Bradley Turnwald. “They were natural depictions of celebrities eating and drinking in their everyday lives.”

Celebrities, he said, “exist in

Healthy Junk Food Swaps Your Whole Family Will Love

If you give kids the option between cucumbers and candy, it’s no secret what their choice is going to be. I know I’m not alone in having littles who are less than enthused about anything green or “clean,” but as a certified nutrition coach and momma of two, I am constantly trying to find the balance.

What if we could make their favorite fun foods but in a smarter way? Here are my top four simple swaps:

Instead of pizza rolls, try bagel thin pizzas.

Take bagel thin halves and add sauce, cheese and their favorite toppings. Now just throw

Vegan junk food can harm your health, says Henry Dimbleby | News

The government’s food tsar has attacked highly processed vegan substitutes for meat, warning that they can be “junk foods” that are harmful to health because they often contain high amounts of salt, fat and monosodium glutamate.

Henry Dimbleby, author of the national food strategy published last year, called for healthier, British-made plant-based foods to replace imported products.

He was asked today at the Oxford Farming Conference about the impacts on health and British farming of highly processed vegan products.

He replied that after attending the Cop26 climate change conference in November he had been sent a 2kg bag of frozen

Junk food and the brain: How modern diets lacking in micronutrients may contribute to angry rhetoric

Ultra-processed foods high in sugar, fat and empty carbs are bad for the mind as well as the body. Lack of micronutrients affects brain function and influences mood and mental health symptoms.

Emotional, non-rational, even explosive remarks in public discourse have escalated in recent years. Politicians endure insults during legislative discussions; scientists receive emails and tweets containing verbal abuse and threats.

What’s going on? This escalation in angry rhetoric is sometimes attributed to social media. But are there other influences altering communication styles?

As researchers in the field of nutrition and mental health, and authors of The

Western News – Expert insights: How exercise can curb your junk food craving

Every January, millions of individuals make New Year’s resolutions to lose weight or eat healthier, if not both. To achieve this goal, many individuals will begin strenuous exercise programs that incorporate too much exercise too soon, leading to fitness burnout or injury. Overtraining can actually prevent you from losing weight.

Easy access to junk food thwarts obesity efforts | News

A crackdown on junk food will struggle to reduce obesity because of the “ubiquity and desirability” of unhealthy options, experts have warned.

Easy access to junk food 24 hours a day makes losing weight difficult for millions of people, according to a review commissioned by the National Institute for Health Research, which advises ministers.

The Department of Health and Social Care has announced compulsory calorie labelling in large food outlets, a 9pm curfew for television adverts for foods high in fat, salt and sugar and restrictions on store and online promotions for unhealthy foods.

The new review by the Centre

Junk food marketing reaching young people on livestream gaming platforms

Children and teens who use livestreaming gaming platforms may be bombarded with influencer-endorsed ads for energy drinks, junk food and alcohol, new research shows.

“This type of marketing can normalize high-fat, high-sugar and high-sodium foods at a time in young viewers’ lives when they’re developing eating habits that are going to follow them into adulthood,” said Caitlyn Edwards, a postdoctoral scholar of nutritional sciences at Penn State University.

“We saw an increase, for example, in alcohol branding, which could normalize the idea

Hospitals are still selling junk food 13 years after Welsh Government ban

Hospitals in Wales are still selling unhealthy foods in vending machines including burgers and pasties more than a decade after the then-health minister ordered a ban.

In March 2008 Edwina Hart AM issued a letter which was distributed by the chief medical officer for Wales to local health boards and NHS trust chairs with statutory guidance on promoting healthy eating in hospitals.

It said that unhealthy vending had to be removed from NHS hospitals and issued guidance about what type of food would be allowed in hospital vending machines.

A charter published at the time said food had to have
